Writing Blocked Like A Hat

Mothers Day

IMG 3772 Copy Afterlight
You are young here,
younger than I ever knew you.

You held me
as if the world were simple.

I am growing (much) heavier
in your arms.

Sixty-five years later
I look at this photograph

and see how completely
I was carried

not only that afternoon,
but all my life

how quickly love
becomes memory

how your smile survives
not as happiness

but as courage worn lightly
for my sake.

What I could not know then
was how often

your tiredness went unnamed
how much your love

simply carried on.
Sixty-five years later

my whole world
is held there.

Sunlight fixes nothing
It only falls.
